Training program held on Urban Planning with Strong Resistance to Earthquakes
[November 24, 2009]
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government carried out training and joint research in connection with urban planning with strong resistance to earthquakes as an Asian Network of Major Cities 21 training program from November 10 to November 13. Two technical officials from the Singapore Building and Construction Authority took part.
Singapore is not a country that is prone to earthquakes, but there are many tall buildings within the city and these shake roughly when there is an earthquake in an adjacent country such as Indonesia, resulting in widespread fear among citizens not used to earthquakes, who will often flee out into the streets at such times. There are also apparently many inquiries made regarding the safety of buildings that have shaken after an earthquake. To counter these matters, Singapore has taken initiatives such as setting up a communications system regarding inspections to determine the safety of buildings following an earthquake.
This training session focused on learning about such things as earthquake-resistance standards for buildings and the latest earthquake-resistance refurbishment methods, while also included an inspection of the Seibu Department Store headquarters in Ikebukuro – which has carried out earthquake resistance refurbishments – and proved to be a worthwhile four days.
